A long time ago, Nhat Dinh – a mandarin in the Nguyen Dynasty, he retired when getting old and back to the cottage to take care of his mother who was really weak at that time.

As legendary, his mother was seriously ill and need to eat nutritious foods to recover her health. Therefore, everyday Nhat Dinh had to trek into the forest and follow the 5 km long roads to find fresh fish in order to make soup for his mother. The neighborhoods and people in the area were gossiping and making the rumors of a monk eating meat. However, he still had a constant will and ingnored all those prejudices.

The rumor came to the king of Tu Duc then he decided to make things up. The truth was Nhat Dinh still taking care of his mother by feed fishes and meats while constantly loyal in Buddhist. Being touched by the reality, then later in 1848, one year after the death of Thien Dinh, Tu Duc has ordered to build a temple for worshping and reminding of  the noble gesture. He then named the temple as “Tu Hieu”, means piety in Vietnamese.
