Son Doong cave was first discovered in 1991 by a local man named Ho Khanh. He stopped to look for a shelter while searching for the lowland area of Phong Nha Ke Bang National Park. Ho Khanh could not imagine that the treasure hunt will help him discover the world’s largest cave with magical beauty.

Then members of the British Cave Research Association (BCRA) came and conducted a survey of the cave.  They talked to Khanh and encouraged him to try it again.

He led the British cave explorers to the cave in 2009.  Then undertook their first expedition into what would later be known as the Son Doong Cave – meaning ‘mountain cave’.

The magical beauty of giant Son Doong Cave

According to the geologists, Son Doong was formed about 2-5 million years ago same as others of Phong Nha Caves. It was time when the water flowed across the limestone area buried along a fault line. The water erodes and creates a huge tunnel like today. Son Doong is a giant cave, which is considered to be the world’s largest cave ever discovered by humans. It’s so big that a Boeing 747 can easily fly through the largest hangout. Many people who stepped in here say they have never seen the same thing anywhere else in the world. Inside the cave is a huge ecosystem, the jungle is so big that you feel like you are entering another world.

“Going into the cave makes us feel small and humble. Surprisingly, going into eight kilometers, daylight still shines throughout the caves”.

“Its entrance is rather small and thick, with fog, caused by the cold air inside. It is exposed to the hot air outside, into the forest around the entrance,” Spies said.

“This cave is harder to enter than Batman’s Cave”

These are the comments of journalist and explorer who have been through the fairy time to visit Son Doong Cave Viet Nam. In order to enter the cave, visitors have to climb through a stone wall of about 90 meters high, using a harness and rope. After that, they had to cross the huge pile of rocks and crawl under the massive limestone blocks of the house.

New ecological system of Son Doong Cave

According to the discoverers, the unique point of Son Doong is not only its huge size but also the primary ecosystem. The Cave owns an ecosystem separating from the outside world and including the blind fauna and albino fauna. Because many parts of the cave are exposed to sunlight, the adventurers has found out a primitive forest with rich vegetation. It has never been traced to humans for millions of years. Experts have even called the forest in the cave “the garden of Eden” to honor its beauty. As the number of visitors per year is very limited to protect the ecology here. Therefore what we know about Son Doong is still very little.
